They’re the generous folk who volunteer their time for the NSW Rural Fire Service, and on Sunday 12 April 2015 their big red truck will be rumbling into Pitt Town for the Oakville Fire Brigade Family Day and Car Show, along with a convoy of new and vintage cars and bikes hot on its heels.

“This year will mark the 14th year the Oakville Fire Brigade has held this event,” says secretary Andrew Rutter. “We usually have about 500 people attending each year, but we expect around 650 this year. It’s always great to see more people!”

All funds raised on the day go to the brigade – so you know your money’s going to a valuable local cause.

Kids will enjoy the sideshow rides (buy a day pass for $20), climbing over the fire truck and having their faces painted. For the adults, the highlights include checking out the rare cars and bikes, browsing the market stalls selling locally made products and watching the fire brigade demonstrations.

There will also be a raffle, a huge auction with one-of-a-kind household items, and the chance to meet your local emergency service workers.

Oakville Fire Brigade is a volunteer community-based fire service. Want to help out? Andrew says the service doesn’t currently have any volunteers from the Vermont Estate, but they’re keen for anyone who wants to lend a hand to join.

“There are lots of jobs in the Rural Fire Service,” he says. “It’s not just firefighting. There’s communications, logistics support, maintenance and training.”

In the lead-up to the big day, you can also get involved by selling raffle tickets (or buying them when the volunteers come knocking) or, if you have a business, by sponsoring the event. Contact Andrew Rutter for more information on 0412 383 696, or at

The Oakville Fire Brigade Family Day and Car Show is on Sunday 12 April 2015 from 10am till late, at Pitt Town Sporting Club, 139 Old Pitt Town Road, Pitt Town. Adult entry is $10, and for kids it is $5.

Expect more at Vermont
