May means Mother’s Day – the day we all stop and say thanks to our mums for all the wonderful work they do every other day of the year. We’ve collected five ideas for thoughtful things you can do for your mum this Mother’s Day – because, quite simply, she deserves it.

1. Julie’s perfect Mother’s Day breakfast
Our resident kitchen superstar Julie Sullivan recommends making these eggy muffins for mum on Mother’s Day morning – they’re a tasty (and healthy!) breakfast.

“Small children may need help dicing the ingredients and using the oven,” suggests Julie. “But it’s worth it because Mum will be very impressed!”

Muffin Omelettes
Makes 6
3 rashers bacon, diced
3 mushrooms, diced
¼ cup diced red capsicum
1 spring onion, finely sliced
6 eggs
6 tbsp grated cheese

1. Preheat oven 180ºC.
2. Grease a muffin tin, or use paper muffin cases.
3. Sprinkle bacon and vegetables evenly into cases.
4. Crack one egg into each muffin.
5. Sprinkle 1 tbsp cheese over each egg.
6. Bake for 15 minutes.
7. Serve with triangles of toast and a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.
Don’t forget to clean up! Most of the mess can be cleaned up while the muffins cook.

2. Locally crafted jewellery

Jewellery is a tried and tested Mother’s Day gift that your mum is bound to appreciate. And buying local adds a special touch.

Vermont resident Kirby Will makes bespoke, hand-stamped jewellery. She can imprint names or dates onto pendants and bracelets – and the results are beautiful, unique pieces that Mum will treasure.

3. Pamper her in Pitt Town

Make Mum an appointment at Jeana’s Country Spa in Pitt Town. Local resident Jeana offers body masks, hot stone massages, facials and pedicures, among other treatments.

For Mother’s Day, Jeana is offering More Times readers two indulgent gift options. Give Mum the gift of relaxation with the ‘I’m Mum’s Favourite’ package – a half-hour back massage and signature facial for just $99. Or treat her to some hair care TLC with ‘I Love to Spoil Mum’ – a shampoo and blow dry, plus a hair care pack (shampoo, conditioner and a treatment) for $99.

See www.jeanascountryspa.com.au for a full list of services or call 02 4580 9860. Or just pop in and say hello to Jeana at Shop 5/77 Bathurst Street, Pitt Town.

4. Simple and special homemade cards

Making your own Mother’s Day card is a thoughtful gesture. And it’s something that even the littlest family member can do – though they might need some help from Dad or an older sibling.

Set out coloured card and craft supplies and get creative. Or take inspiration from the season and press autumn leaves (instead of flowers) in heavy books for a few weeks. Phone books work well for this – so do encyclopaedia and big dictionaries. When the leaves are pressed flat, glue them to the front of a card, decorate with glitter glue or stickers, and write your own message to Mum.

5. Take and frame a family photo

You can have a family photo taken professionally (local photographer Belinda Walkom takes beautiful shots of families and children, see www.belindawalkom.com), choose an old favourite, or get out the camera now and get snapping – see our tips for autumn photography below.

Then have it framed beautifully at Ernie’s Fotos ‘n’ Frames in South Windsor, where you will be offered custom picture framing to suit your snap perfectly. Watch Mum’s face as she unwraps her gift on Mother’s Day morning – this is a sure-fire way to her heart.
