Michelle Timbs and husband Geoff are keen home renovators, and with the help of McDonald Jones Homes, they have just built their dream home from scratch in Fernville.

“We feel like the luckiest people in the world,” says Michelle. “Not only was it possible to build a large home, but we can give our two boys plenty of room to play in the backyard. The country and mountain views at our doorstep definitely add that extra something, as well as the access to major shops and work within a short drive.”

The couple secured one of the few 1,550m2 plots of land in the sought-after estate, and started building their home mid-2013, drawing inspiration from their trips overseas to add unique touches.

“We really wanted the house to have a resort-style look,” says Michelle, “so we can feel like we’re always on holiday. We’ve taken inspiration from Bali – one of our favourite destinations – and adapted it to our needs.”

They have created the perfect oasis by adding many tropical plants to the pool area and not one, but two, Balinese-style huts. One houses the outdoor kitchen and bar, and the other has two sunbeds, with subtle lighting from fairy lights and sheer curtains for added privacy.

And the two boys still have plenty of space to play. “We just love seeing the kids enjoying a game of cricket or footy with friends in the yard. In the cooler evenings, they toast marshmallows and tell stories around the fire pit. It reminds me of when I was younger and our family would sit around the fire on camping trips,” says Michelle.

With an extensive collection of Buddha statues, there’s plenty to love on the inside too. Michelle is a big fan of bi-fold doors for ventilation and making the most of indoor-outdoor entertaining, and the large picture windows overlooking the wraparound pool provide plenty of natural light.

It’s clear that Michelle and Geoff have put a lot of love into their new home, and they would recommend building your own home to anyone who is considering it, and has the time and money to invest.

Their secret tip? “You can never have too much storage – and the C-Bus/Push Control automation system from Clipsal is a dream.”
